Dr.Alex Moulton

1920  -  2012

At this museum, we exhibit successive models of Moulton bicycles created throughout the lifetime of Dr. Alex Moulton. The display traces the evolution from the first-generation F-frame era, introduced in 1962 and produced until 1974, through to the second-generation space frame models that began in 1983 and continue to the present day. We hope visitors will reflect on Dr. Moulton’s remarkable achievements and appreciate the bicycle as a unique and rational means of transportation.

Dr. Alex Moulton sparked a revolution in small-wheeled bicycles more than 50 years ago. It would not be an exaggeration to say that all of today’s small-wheeled bicycles are influenced by the original F-frame. Not only did he prove that small wheels could deliver the performance of a full-sized bicycle, but since its debut in 1962, he also enhanced comfort and performance through the use of front and rear suspension systems.

Questioning the conventional diamond-frame design and large-diameter wheels conceived in the 19th century, Dr. Moulton—drawing upon his background as a leading authority on suspension systems for all types of vehicles, as well as through countless prototypes—continued to evolve his designs without pause, ultimately perfecting the present-day space frame (truss) structure.

Furthermore, his design theory was proven in 1986 when a Human Powered Vehicle race established a world speed record of 82 km/h in the normal riding position. This record remains unbeaten to this day. In addition, many other records have been achieved in numerous races.

By viewing more than 100 Moulton bicycles on display, visitors will recognize the extraordinary imagination and design sensibility supported by solid technology, and above all, the exceptional level of craftsmanship and completeness embodied in each machine. In other words, Dr. Moulton was a genius who changed his era and challenged conventional wisdom. We sincerely hope that as many people as possible will come to experience the greatness of this remarkable individual in our small museum.
